Parents score $100,000 grant from Target for Orem school

Last month, parents at Orem Elementary watched their school skyrocket into the top 5 in a text vote-driven contest for a $50,000 grant from Clorox. But realizing they were not going to capture the grand prize, they tried Plan B.

And they won an even bigger reward.

On Thursday, Orem Elementary Principal Rachelle Bolingbroke announced to students that their school has won a $100,000 grant from Target Corp. Several parents nominated Orem in the contest, which was promoted by the Ellen DeGeneres Show. Viewers of the show helped pick 50 schools nationwide to receive a $100,000 grant. Orem is the only winner in Utah.

"Students are so excited," Bolingbroke said Friday. "The energy is electrifying right now."

Target plans to present the giant check at an assembly on Monday.

The school plans to spend the money on technology, including buying about 35 to 40 computers for a second computer lab. The lab was built as part of an addition to the school a few years ago, but the school has not had enough funds to buy the computers.

An existing lab with 40 computers is used daily for a rotating computer specialty class. A second lab, Bolingbroke said, is needed both to provide more classroom time with computers and to handle year-end testing. This year, Alpine School District plans to administer all standard exams in math, language arts and science via computers. Orem Elementary has more than 600 students.

Julie Hale, a parent of a second- and a fourth-grader at Orem Elementary, wrote the winning grant nomination. When her kids learned the news, they told her, "You’re going to be famous," she said with a laugh.

"I was totally shocked and overwhelmed," Hale said. She said her school’s population nearly meets federal requirements to be classified as Title I because of poverty. Without the classification, Orem Elementary does not receive federal Title I funding that flows to nearby schools.

"You often see two to three kids huddled up around one computer," Hale said. "Right now [the second lab is] a room, fully set up, with all the cables and desks — but no computers. It’s ready and waiting."

OREM -- After working tirelessly for months to raise money for a new computer lab, parents at Orem Elementary are finally being rewarded.

It was announced Wednesday the school is being given $100,000 grant from Target. Orem Elementary was one of 48 schools and two school districts throughout the country and the only school in Utah to receive the award.

The money will be used to furnish a second computer lab at the school.

"This is more money than we ever imagined," principal Rachelle Bolingbroke said. "We will be able to upgrade technology in classrooms as well, get new projectors, smart boards and iPads. These are things we have none or very few of so it is exciting to be able to bring that technology to our school."

Currently the school has only one computer lab, which serves more than 700 students. The application to Target was submitted after parents tried and failed to get enough votes to win a $50,000 grant from Clorox in December.

Julie Hale wrote the winning submission for the Target grant.

"I wouldn't have submitted if it wasn't for the energy of the PTA and dedicated parents that were trying so hard to get $50,000 from Clorox," Hale said. "I felt their passion and kind of took it on."

Hale says her submission included details about the school narrowly missing the cutoff to be a Title I school.

"I just said many so-called poor schools have much better technology than us because they receive federal money, and we have to raise our own," Hale said.

Hale also included a photo of the space designated for the new computer lab that currently is sitting empty.

A spokeswoman for Target says Title I eligibility is one of the many components the selection team took into considerations when choosing the winners.

"We looked at what the unique needs of each school were and truly focused on how we could help meet those needs," Jill Hornbacher said. "We here at Target have a long-standing commitment to education and are happy to be able to support these schools in this way and be able to improve their learning environments."

Hornbacher says more than 7,000 nominations for the grants were received.

Bolingbroke says the new computer lab will help the school meet state testing requirements as well as provide learning opportunities for students.

"The way technology is moving there is so much available to students, education wise, on the computer," she said. "This will really benefit our students."

Bolingbroke says she doesn't know when the school will actually receive the money but hopes the new computer lab will be in place before the end of the school year.

Orem Elementary does amazing things and that is because we have amazing parents!

However, our kids to the darnedest thing and grow up and leave the school, taking their amazing parents with them. We need you noobs to help us out!

The PTA is starting to fill service positions for next year and would like to invite you to help us out.

PTAs in general usually have a bad rep, but when I tell my friends the things our PTA does and how fun it is, they want to come to our school - we do things differently here!

The major spots we are looking to fill are:

*President Elect

Shadow the current president to learn the ropes for your turn as president. I personally can say being president is hard work, but so awarding. I'm very glad I did it!

*Secretary

Easiest job ever - take minutes at monthly meetings for the pres and record volunteer hours.

*Assistant Treasurer
To assist and be trained by Jen Nielsen who will be the 2012-2013 treasurer. If you like crunching numbers and running your home finances, this is a great job for you! It starts off heavy in the beginning of the school year, but after Back to School Night and Carnival, it really slows down.

We have plenty other areas you can help us with too. If you think you can help us out, want to be more involved at the school and stay connected with the teachers and principal, this is an awesome opportunity to accomplish that!

Thanks to everyone who helped us do as well as we did in the Clorox Power A Bright Future Program.

We did amazing. We reached 5th place in our category and we were in the top one percentile overall out of 1622 schools. We really did rock for a community that is smaller than some of the higher ranked schools.

The state of Utah has mandated all year end testing be done online this year. Orem Elementary simply does not have the computers needed to meet this requirement. Most schools in our area are eligible for extra funds from the state, but due to our unique demographics, we do not get any additional funds.

OES Summer Math Challenge:

You have worked hard to learn math this year. To forget it all during the summer would be a bummer!

Spend 10 - 20 minutes doing a math activity for a total of 20 days and have your parents initial or sign it off on this sheet. When school starts in August, bring this sheet to your teacher. Your teacher will love you, you will be glad you don't have to relearn everything and the PTA will give you a small treat for all your hard work.

There is an important district meeting for OES parents. The meeting will be held Thursday, Sept. 30, at 1:00pm., in the OES library.

Our Board is seeking input about the Mission, Vision, Values, and Goals of ASD. They will also be informing people of the potential Bond election in the Fall of 2011. Included in the Bond discussion will be 1) accountability for the 2006 Bond, 2) why do we need a bond? and 3) the process and time line in the upcoming year for a potential bond.

PTA and School Community Council members that attend our school meeting should have students attending our school. We will keep the meetings to one hour.

There will be time included in the hour to express feedback, concerns, or ask questions to our Board Members about any issue.

Hi, my name is Cathy Ambrose and I am super excited to be the PTA President at Orem Elementary for the upcoming 2010-2011 school year. I posted my picture so you could recognize me around the school and feel free to say hi or ask me questions.

If you had asked me 10 years ago when my oldest started kindergarten if I ever planned to be PTA president, I would've said you were crazy! But as more of my children started attending OES, I became more involved and realized the PTA's contributions to the school really were making a difference and I wanted to be part of it.

Orem Elementary has an awesome PTA. We help make OES the BEST!!! Some of the many programs we sponsor are yearbook, newsletter, after school programs, vision screening, ribbon week, family month, and story telling, just to name a few

Helping moms and dads are always needed to get these wonderful programs off the ground. If you want to help a little or a lot, we welcome you! Listed below are some positions we are trying to fill so we can keep our many wonderful programs going. PTA PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Dear Parents and Friends of OES,

I can't believe that this is the final newsletter of the school year. How time has flown this year. We have had a great year and as I reflect on the school year I can't help but feel gratitude for all the people that help our children have a great experience here at Orem Elementary. First of all we have Principal Bolingbroke and the teachers and staff here at OES that really care about our kids and are working hard every day to make sure they have a good safe learning environment and a quality education. We are very lucky to have the great teachers that we have.

I also reflect on all of the many hours that you parents put in volunteering in the classroom and for the other PTA activities. We have had a lot of really fun activities this year that would not be possible without the help of volunteers. So thank you so much for all that you have done to help in any way this school year. Many hands make light work and there are truly many, many hands that help here at OES.

May will be a busy month with teacher appreciation, field day, beautification day, and 6th grade graduation. For Teacher appreciation we will be treating our teachers to lunch, breakfast and many other activities. We have a tradition of showering them with flowers on Wednesday that week. We will have flowers for sale before school and the teachers all have a vase in their classrooms. Feel free to bring a flower from home or buy one for $1 to give to your child’s teacher. This is a fun way to show them how much we love and appreciate them. I also suggest you have your child sit down some time that week a write a letter or draw a picture for their teacher. A heartfelt letter or picture is a treasure for a teacher. Watch for notes coming home for the other end of year activities.

Once again if anyone is looking to become more involved with the PTA Cathy Ambrose will be the president next year and would love some help. Your feedback helps us improve and make things better in the future so please return them.

Hello Parents and Friends,

Happy April and Spring! It is hard to believe that we are almost done with another school year. We had a fun filled March. We had our storytelling assembly where the finalists told their stories for the whole school. We had our Moms & Muffins and our Classic Skate Night which were both huge successes. It is great to see families having fun together. We also finished up with the second session of our after school programs. Our chorus kids sang at a Utah Flash game and did a great job! We had our after school programs assembly and parent showcase and the kids showed off all of their talents.

April brings spring break and after that the school year seems to fly by. Hopefully we will get some nice weather and it will feel like spring!

We have quite a few big things to end the school year with that we will need help on. We have Beautification day coming up May 15th. This is a Saturday where we ask for families to come work on the outside of OES cleaning and planting flowers. Many hands make light work so mark your calendars and come join us in making OES more beautiful. Teacher appreciation is the week of May 10-14th. We will be sending home notes with the activities for the week. We will sell flowers and have many other fun things for the teachers. Then we will have 6th grade graduation and field day which we will need a lot of volunteers to help us on. So please watch for notes coming home and come get involved.

PTA PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Hello Parents and Friends,

It's hard to believe that it is already March and we only have a few more months of school left. February has come and gone and we had some fun events take place. We had our Dads and Donuts on the 18th and had record attendance. We ordered 49 dozen donuts and served them in the morning and at night. We ran out right at the end and had a few disappointed families. If you did not get a donut please e-mail me at toni.carlson@gmail.com and I will make sure you get some coupons for some donuts. It was great to see all of the Dads reading and enjoying the time with their children. I had one Dad come up to me and say that Dads and Donuts is their family’s favorite PTA activity of the whole year. Thanks for coming and a special thanks to Amy Chariton who planned and organized it.

We had a special Story Telling Assembly and the kids worked hard to get their stories ready. Kylie S. and Macy M. have been chosen to represent our school in the Timpanogos Story Telling Festival. Thank You Carolyn Blosil for setting all of this up for us. Good luck to all who participate.

Mark your Calendars... March will have some fun activities as well. Moms and Muffins will be held March 11th at 7:30 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. Please come and bring some books to read and enjoy a muffin with your child. You can read to your child or have them read to you. We also have another family skate night at Classic Skate in Orem from 5:30 until 8:30. Admission is free and open for the whole family.

I just had to turn in a report to the state PTA of all the volunteer hours at our school. I am amazed at all the parents and volunteers that spend their time at our school helping in so many ways. We have a lot of people that work behind the scenes volunteering their time with little or no recognition. I want to thank everyone that has helped in any way make our school better. Our teachers do such a fabulous job with the time and resources that they have. I just wanted to thank those that
help behind the scenes as well. A good example is the home reading program. We have many people that make that program work who come in and switch out books every day. We have a great community of parents and friends of OES. Everyone working together helps make our school great. So thank you again for all you do.

We are still looking for people that would like to help in the PTA next year. Please contact me if you are interested. We meet the first Tuesday of each month at 9:30 in room 206. Come join us if you are interested. We will be starting the plans for the end of the school year, things like field day and 6th grade graduation and would love more helpers. Have a great March.

Orem Elementary has been chosen to be the “model school” for Steve James’concert, on October 13, 2009, during the State’s Safe and Free Drug Conference. This is a great honor for our school. At the concert, there will be in attendance National and State representatives as well as local leaders. The media will also be present, so please be sure to sign and return the media release form your child will bring home the first week in October. Steve James will be at our school early in the day (Oct. 13th) for an assembly. The evening concert will be at our own Mountain View High School at 7:00pm. We are honored to be chosen as the “model school,” and hope you will be able to attend this extraordinary family concert.

Parent/Teacher Conferences will be on October 7th and 8th. Both of those days will be
“common days” which means ALL students will come to school from 8:00am - 2:15pm. The teachers will be available anytime between 3:15–7:15pm Wednesday and Thursday. The Book Fair will also be the same week, beginning Tuesday and ending Thursday evening.

Remember to invite your children to walk to school on Wednesday (Oct. 7th) as part of
our school’s “Walk to School Day.”

Carnival is coming UP!!!!

Our annual CARNIVAL will be held on Monday, September 21 from 4:30 to 7:30pm. Please mark your calendars now for an evening of food, games, and fun with your family. This is the only PTA sponsored fund raiser held during the year. It is very important in funding the great programs you love at OES like Home Reading, After School Programs, Crazy Cubs Reading Club, and many others.

You should have received our first carnival flyer by now on neon light green paper. On that flyer are classroom assignments related to basket auction themed donations and also the food assignment for that grade (bake sale, cake walk, etc.)

As always, this is a real community affair ---we will need LOTS of helpers. Each teacher has been assigned to be over finding volunteers for 1 game so if you can spare an hour or 2, please contact your child’s teacher so they can put you down. You may also contact any of the carnival chair’s.

Ticket Sales: Pre-sales will begin in front of the school before and after school on Wednesday, September 16 and continue each day through the morning of Monday, Sept. 21.

Silent Auction: We need baskets! If you have old baskets in your storage, please put them to good use and donate them to the carnival. Please also watch for the special triple point and double point due dates on basket auction item donations.

Business Sponsors: We’d like to encourage any parents who are business owners (or employees of a business) to consider supporting Orem Elementary. You can do this by:

1. donating an item from your inventory that might be used in the silent auction;
2. donating credit, coupons, or a special discount from your place of business, also to be used in the silent auction baskets;

To become a partnering business you may either write a note and return it through your student as your family’s silent auction contribution OR call Ada Wilson at 801-224-1521. Please include the name of the business and a phone number contact in any message.

Every business that helps us out in even the smallest way will be listed on our big “Business Partners” poster with major donors ($100 or more) being listed first. Being a contributor to the community is good business!

If you are willing to volunteer for an hour at the school carnival, please sign up on one of the sheets in the office or contact a member of the carnival committee. We need help serving food, at the bake sale, selling tickets before and after school as well as during the carnival.

Also, check with your child’s teacher. Each teacher needs volunteers to man their game stations.
Your child’s class will receive carnival points for your donated time.
